| When Im not involved with sculpting horses, Im involved with the real thing. My family owns and operates a seasonal guest ranch in the High Sierra of central California. The ranch has been my grandmothers business since 1952, when she and my grandfather took a chance and moved from a relatively normal, predictable life with the symphony in Dallas, Texas to spend their summers at 8,000 feet with thirty-five brand-new horses, uncounted bears, trout and horrific thunderstorms. The chance paid off, and the Muir Trail Ranch continues to provide a unique summer vacation for hundreds of people each year. Click here for the official ranch Web site.
I grew up at the ranch, and intend to continue with its operation until Im too feeble to saddle a horse. |

| Autumn is an amazing time of year up there! The snow flies in October, so we head to the foothills with our horses. | ||||||||||

| One of my jobs during the summer is guiding rides for our guests. This is the view from the office. Yes its fun, but not when youve got 10 dudes behind you, youre on slickrock in a thunderstorm and you realize you picked the wrong day to take the green 4-year-old drafters out for a packing lesson. | ||||||||||

| Our horses are the ultimate four-wheel-drive vehicles! We have forty of them of varying breeds, all in different stages of age and training. They provide an endless reference for sculpting, and of learning new ways to cuss. | ||||||||||

| Two of my best friends. The palomino is Lipa, an 8-year-old Quarter Horse whos enjoying her lazy life. The bay is Geronimo, and hes the Worlds Most Perfect Horse. Hes a Thoroughbred that dispels all negative stereotypes of Thoroughbreds. Hes not even a horse, in fact. (But hes still very fast.) In the off-season (October to May) Im actually a normal person who goes to college, tries to find work as an EMT and has a sedate, orderly life (yeah right! My friends can tell you Im still pretty strange). I hope to continue my education in art, and intend to get a degree from CalArts, UCLA or other university with a good art program. The other joys in my life come from good music, trips to the desert, flying airplanes, developing prints in our darkroom, and spotting Porsches. Click here to go back to more interesting things. |
